Line & Choice

Choose what deserves your commitment

Bi places Water above Earth. One unbroken line stands in the fifth position among five divided lines. The classical text asks how people come together, whom they follow, and whether their association has a trustworthy center.

Read Bi as an invitation to examine the bonds you are forming. Cooperation needs sincerity, a sound purpose, and a commitment you can sustain. Belonging is useful when the people and terms deserve your trust.

Association needs a sound center

比:吉。原筮元永貞,无咎。不寧方來,後夫凶。— Zhouyi, Hexagram 8

The judgment begins favorably, then asks for an examination of lasting correctness. The Tuan commentary explains Bi through mutual assistance and following, with the firm line at the center. A favorable association still calls for a careful look at its basis; joining a group is not enough by itself.

The Image says “地上有水,比;先王以建萬國,親諸侯”. The Image describes water on the earth and early kings establishing states and drawing rulers into relationship. In a modern setting, this can suggest cooperation built around a reliable center. That is an interpretation, not a promise about a particular relationship. The third line warns about association with the wrong people, while the final line warns about a bond without a head or beginning.

Make trust concrete

What makes this person, group, or partnership worth joining? Look for dependable conduct, shared expectations, and a purpose that remains sound after the first enthusiasm.

Timing does not replace judgment

The warning about arriving late can prompt a review of hesitation and commitment. It does not require you to rush into an unsuitable bond out of fear of being left behind.

Questions for reflection

  • Which shared purpose am I choosing to support?
  • What evidence shows that this association deserves trust?
  • What commitment can I make sincerely and maintain?
