Hexagram 5 · Xu 需
Waiting can be a deliberate choice
Xu places Water above Heaven. Strength is present below, but danger lies ahead. The pattern asks how to stay ready without rushing into conditions you cannot yet cross safely.
Short answer
Read Xu as purposeful waiting: keep your commitments, care for the resources you need, and watch for a sound opening. The pause has value when it prepares you to act.

Classical text
Trust and steadiness before the crossing
需:有孚,光亨。貞吉,利涉大川。— Zhouyi, Hexagram 5
The judgment joins sincerity and constancy with the prospect of crossing a great river. The Tuan commentary explains that danger lies ahead, yet strength need not fall into it. Waiting here is responsive to a real obstacle, not a prediction that every delay will end favorably.
The Image says “雲上於天,需;君子以飲食宴樂”: clouds gather above heaven, and the exemplary person eats, drinks, and rests. Its everyday lesson is to sustain yourself while the situation develops. The six line texts describe different distances from danger; timing matters as much as patience.
When it helps
Prepare while you wait
What can you strengthen now: information, relationships, skill, or reserves? Which condition would make the next move responsible?
What to watch
Do not make delay a hiding place
Waiting becomes avoidance when you stop checking the facts or refuse to name what you are waiting for. Set a clear signal for revisiting the choice.
Questions for reflection
- What obstacle makes immediate action unwise?
- What useful preparation is within my control today?
- What evidence would tell me the crossing is ready?
