A difficult beginning needs structure

Zhun places Water above Thunder. Movement has begun below, while danger and uncertainty remain above. The first stage of a new undertaking may be fertile and tangled at the same time.

Read Zhun as early potential meeting real friction. Pause the urge to expand in every direction; establish roles, support, and a workable first step.

Begin by gathering what is needed

屯:元亨,利貞。勿用有攸往,利建侯。— Zhouyi, Hexagram 3

The text holds possibility and difficulty together. It favors constancy, cautions against setting out too broadly, and calls for establishing leaders in its historical setting. A modern analogy is to define responsibilities and enlist capable help before scaling an uncertain effort. That analogy is an interpretation, not a literal translation of “建侯”.

The Image reads “雲雷,屯;君子以經綸”: clouds and thunder accompany the beginning, and the exemplary person brings order to complexity. “Do not set out” is a caution about this moment, not a permanent ban on action.

Give the beginning a frame

What is the smallest workable version of the undertaking? Who needs a clear role, and which resource is missing?

Early friction is information

Do not mistake difficulty for a verdict of failure, or optimism for a reason to ignore it. Map the constraints before committing to a larger move.

Questions for reflection

  • Which part of this new situation is genuinely unclear?
  • What support or structure would make the next step safer?
  • What can wait until the foundation is stronger?
