Line & Choice

Let a thoughtful form express what is sound

Bi, written 賁 here, places Mountain above Fire. Its firm and yielding lines form the pattern that the classical commentary connects with adornment and culture.

Read Bi as a prompt to give your words and actions a fitting form. Make the substance clear, keep presentation proportionate, and choose simplicity when decoration would obscure the point.

Grace has value within its proper limits

賁:亨。小利有攸往。— Zhouyi, Hexagram 22

The judgment speaks of progress and a small benefit in having somewhere to go. The Tuan commentary connects adornment with the interplay of firm and yielding, then turns to patterns in nature and human culture. The limited promise in the judgment keeps the reach of adornment in proportion.

The Image says “山下有火,賁;君子以明庶政,无敢折獄”. The Image presents fire below the mountain and the exemplary person bringing clarity to ordinary affairs while being cautious about deciding judicial cases. The final line speaks of plain or white adornment without blame. Applied today, these themes can suggest using presentation to support understanding and recognizing when a consequential decision requires deeper examination. These are modern analogies; an appealing surface alone supplies little evidence about the quality of what it presents.

Make meaning easier to understand

Ask what your audience needs to understand. Refine the message, tone, and presentation around that purpose, and remove details that distract from it.

Check what supports the appearance

A polished impression can make an unfinished idea feel settled. Examine the facts, work, and commitments beneath the presentation before relying on it.
