Classical text
Reduce excess and support what is lacking
謙:亨,君子有終。— Zhouyi, Hexagram 15
The judgment joins modesty with progress and the exemplary person bringing a course to completion. The Tuan commentary describes the reduction of excess and the increase of what is lowly. It presents modesty as a quality that can remain visible in both a high and a low position.
The Image says “地中有山,謙;君子以裒多益寡,稱物平施”. The Image describes a mountain within the earth, then calls for reducing what is excessive, adding to what is scarce, and weighing things fairly. Applied today, this can suggest an honest assessment of credit, workload, and resources. The third line joins effort with modesty and completion. Later lines include decisive collective action, so humility in this text can coexist with responsibility and firm boundaries. Modern applications depend on the facts of the situation.
When it helps
Give credit and effort their proper weight
Notice what you have contributed and what others have made possible. Share credit fairly, ask where support is missing, and choose the next practical task rather than overstating the result.
What to watch
Keep self-assessment accurate
Understating your ability can obscure useful work or leave a need unmet. Modesty can include stating your limits, asking for help, and accepting responsibility when you are equipped to carry it.
Questions for reflection
- Where am I overestimating or underestimating my contribution?
- What excess could be reduced, and what lack needs support?
- What would a fair and proportionate next action look like?
