Build fellowship around a purpose people can share

Tong Ren places Heaven above Fire. Its single divided line is in the second position. The classical text begins with people coming together in the open, and asks what makes their cooperation sound.

Read Tong Ren as a prompt to find common ground that can hold more than a familiar inner circle. Make the purpose clear, invite honest participation, and examine whether shared effort rests on fair terms.

Let the shared purpose reach beyond your circle

同人于野,亨。利涉大川,利君子貞。— Zhouyi, Hexagram 13

The judgment links fellowship in the open with progress, a difficult crossing, and a sound course for the exemplary person. The Tuan commentary joins clarity with strength and speaks of understanding the aims of people widely. Cooperation gains its direction from something people can genuinely share.

The Image says “天與火,同人;君子以類族辨物”. The Image pairs heaven and fire and describes distinguishing groups and things. Applied today, this can suggest recognizing different skills, roles, and needs within a common undertaking. That is a modern analogy. The second line warns about fellowship confined to the clan, while the third depicts concealed weapons and prolonged distrust. A shared label alone cannot settle rival interests or make people trust one another.

Make common ground explicit

Name the task and the reasons for doing it together. Ask what each person can contribute, what they need, and how disagreements will be handled before commitments grow.

Notice the boundaries of belonging

Check whose voice is missing and whether loyalty is being used to avoid a difficult question. Broader cooperation requires room for differences and a clear basis for trust.

Questions for reflection

  • What purpose can we honestly share?
  • Who should be included in this conversation?
  • What difference needs to be acknowledged before we act together?
