Hexagram 11 · Tai 泰
Help favorable conditions become lasting cooperation
Tai places Earth above Heaven: three divided lines above three unbroken lines. Its classical commentary describes heaven and earth meeting, and people in different positions sharing an aim.
Short answer
Read Tai as a prompt to make good use of an opening. When communication and support are available, turn them into practical cooperation. Favorable conditions still need attention and sound judgment.

Classical text
Exchange makes room for growth
泰:小往大來,吉亨。— Zhouyi, Hexagram 11
The judgment describes the small departing and the great arriving, with good fortune and progress. The Tuan commentary connects this to heaven and earth interacting so that things can flourish, and to shared intentions between those above and below. The name Peace points to a condition of fruitful exchange, rather than the absence of all difficulty.
The Image says “天地交,泰;后以財成天地之道,輔相天地之宜,以左右民”. The Image speaks of heaven and earth meeting and a ruler assisting their workings to support the people. Applied today, this can suggest helping a promising situation through coordination and care. That is a modern analogy. The third line warns that level ground can slope and departures can return; the final line depicts a wall falling back into its moat. Openness needs maintenance, and no favorable phase is guaranteed to last.
When it helps
Use the opening constructively
Where are people already willing to listen and cooperate? Choose a concrete shared task, agree on responsibilities, and support the conditions that make the exchange possible.
What to watch
Do not mistake ease for permanence
A smooth period can hide neglected details. Check what supports the progress, where strain is building, and how you would adapt if cooperation became harder.
Questions for reflection
- What exchange is helping this situation move forward?
- How can I turn present goodwill into useful cooperation?
- What needs care now so that progress remains sustainable?
